Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family. It's widely used as a coloring agent and as a spice to flavour Indian curries. Turmeric has many medicinal properties of which one is its anti-cancer properties. Researchers believe the compound that gives turmeric its yellow color, known as curcumin, inhibits tumor-promoting enzymes and interferes with the growth of cancerous tumors. Because it's an antioxidant, curcumin neutralizes the free radicals that raise cancer and heart disease risk. A number of studies also have shown that a teaspoon of turmeric a day can keep cancer at bay. Turmeric also contains anti-bacterial properties. Alternate therapies use it as an antiseptic for cuts and burns. Use turmeric regularly in cooking to avail maximum benefits.
